Pampas

The Pampas is perhaps the best-known region in Argentina.

The bare mention of its name is enough to bring forth a feeling of legend, mystery and infinitude. It is a word of Quechua origin meaning "treeless plain". As a matter of fact, most of its surface is composed by vast grasslands and crops where the image of the "gaucho" is still present in the mores inherited by countrymen. Famous for their riding skills, and beef cookouts, we find ourselves exploring a life of a Gaucho, or even better, a 1890's mansion owner with Polo, good food, warm people and good wine.

If you are visiting Buenos Aires, you are only one to two hours from some of the nicest estancias, these are not small ranches, but French and Spanish inspired mansions. Horseback and BBQ are highlights that serve as a great detox from the late nights in Buenos Aires. You can choose day tours from Buenos Aires of stay for several days learning how to play Polo and hob-nob with the local socialits. Most of our favorite Estancias are southwest of Buenos Aires. However the Estancias in Entre Rios area north east, up the delta, offer duck, dove & Pidgeon hunting excursions.

San Antonio de Areco, one of the oldest towns in Argentina, is located in the heart of this region and invites you to return to the eighteenth century with its narrow colonial streets, church, bars and museums. Explore the soul and character of the gaucho at the Ricardo Guiraldes Gaucho Museum, whom the famous Argentine writer brought to life in his cult novel Don Segundo Sombra (1926). Admire the master silversmiths at work in their workshop and marvel at the skill of the leather craftsmen. Heirs to Argentine tradition, these artists perpetuate the international fame of San Antonio de Areco.
