Carmelo

Join those “in the know” and kick back for some R&R at the best kept secret in Uruguay.

Carmelo, located in Western Uruguay, was originally founded as a pueblo in the 16th century by the conquering Spanish and gained full status as a city in the early 1800s thanks to national hero José Gervasi Artigas. Today, the charming region retains much of its Colonial roots, though they seamlessly blend with a renowned wine culture, abundant recreational activities and even a large casino.

In Carmelo, travelers will find themselves completely immersed in the laid-back vibe of the region, awe-inspiring natural splendor of the Colonia countryside, as well as spectacular architecture in the city center, including cobblestone streets and well-kept homes. One of our favorite accommodations in the Carmelo region is the Narbona Wine Lodge, informally known as Finca Narbona, a working farm, vineyard and cozy boutique hotel. A newcomer to the area is the Carmelo Resort & Spa, which is a Hyatt Hotel boasting 20 free-standing bungalows along the Rio Plata.

Whether your vacation style lends itself to history buff, beach bum, culture vulture or adventure seeker, there’s a little something for everyone in Carmelo. City tours of iconic landmarks such as the swing bridge, Plaza Artigas, Templo Historico del Carmen and Plaza Independence will astound you with history and architecture. Tours of the numerous vineyards and wineries, including Narbona Wine Lodge and others, will whet your whistle. Take in the natural side of Carmelo on foot or horseback or by bicycle or river boat. Or, spend the day at the beach soaking up the sun.

Carmelo is easily reached by land via Montevideo. Although a nearly three hour drive, travelers will pass through ancient Colonia del Sacramento, which is worth a stopover. We recommend at least two nights in Carmelo to explore the riverside city and surrounding nature.

Carmelo tours can be customized for your personal interests. Have questions about this destination, tours here or hotels? Speak with our Uruguay destination specialists at (800) 772-9188.
